式辞

　皆さん、ご入学おめでとうございます。博士課程への進学という大きな決断をされたこと、心よりお祝い申し上げます。この一歩は、単なる学びの延長ではなく、未知なる世界への挑戦であり、自らの信念と覚悟が試される道のりです。皆さんの中には、「学問を通じて真理を追究し、社会に貢献したい」という強い志があるはずです。その志こそが、皆さんを博士課程へと導いたのです。

　新万博体育_万博体育官网-【官方授权牌照】大学院連合農学研究科は、1985年に日本で初めて連合方式で設立された博士課程大学院です。今年で40年目を迎え、長い歴史を持っています。国立大学の農学研究科が次々と参画し、最大20大学が参加する大規模な大学院組織となりました。そしてこれまでに多くの博士号取得者を輩出し、国内外で活躍する人材を育成してきました。特に、アジア、アフリカ、南米などの新興国からの留学生も多く受け入れ、母国の政府や大学で重要な役割を担う卒業生も数多くいます。近年、農学の重要性はますます高まっています。日本では地域活性化が求められ、世界では食料?環境?感染症などの課題が深刻化しています。農業生産に伴う温室効果ガスの排出、土壌劣化、海洋汚染、都市化の進行により、食料の安定供給も当たり前ではなくなりました。この限界を超えた地球環境を持続可能な状態に戻すためには、人類が自然の一部であることを認識し、自然と共生する社会システムを再構築することが不可欠です。そのために、研究の推進と実践を急ぐ必要があります。

　さて、博士とは何でしょうか。それは、膨大な知識を持つ者以上に、知の探究を通じて「人としての道」を見極め、それを貫く者のことです。博士は、単に新しい知見を生み出す存在ではありません。得た知識を独占するのではなく、社会へと還元し、次世代へと継承する使命を持っています。学問の本質は、目の前の課題に対して真摯に向き合い、知を共有し、他者と協働しながら社会全体の発展に寄与することにあるのです。

これから皆さんが歩む道は、決して平坦ではありません。博士課程の研究は、試行錯誤と失敗の連続です。しかし、その苦悩の先にこそ、新たな発見や真理が待っています。博士とは、未知の領域へと足を踏み入れる者であり、困難を乗り越えることで道は拓かれます。この道を進む覚悟を持つ者だけが、学問の最前線に立つことができるのです。

　これから皆さんは、さまざまな「偶然」と出会うことでしょう。しかし、その偶然を活かすかどうかは、皆さんの洞察力にかかっています。アインシュタインは「God does not play dice with the universe.」（神はサイコロを振らない）と述べました。これは「世界には偶然に見えても、必然的な法則がある」という考えを示しています。また、ペニシリンを発見したフレミングは、培養皿に生えた青カビを単なる失敗とせず、そこに潜む可能性を見出しました。その洞察が人類の医療を変えたのです。博士課程とは、まさに新たな出会いと発見の場です。未知の現象、研究成果、そして人との巡り合わせを大切にし、恐れることなく挑戦し続けてください。創造的な発想を持ち、自らの道を切り拓く勇気を持って、学問の高みを目指してください。

Ceremonial Address

　Congratulations on your decision to pursue a doctoral degree. This step is not merely a continuation of your studies but a bold challenge into the unknown, a journey that will test your beliefs and determination. Each of you carries a strong desire to seek the truth through academic inquiry and contribute to society. It is this very passion that has led you to the doctoral program.

　The United Graduate School of Agricultural Science at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology was established in 1985 as Japan’s first doctoral program under a joint system. Now in its 40th year, it has grown into a large-scale graduate education organization, with up to 20 national universities participating. Over the years, we have produced numerous Ph.D. graduates who have gone on to play active roles both in Japan and abroad. Many international students, particularly from emerging nations in Asia, Africa, and South America, have studied here, later assuming leadership roles in their home governments and universities.

　The importance of agricultural science continues to rise. In Japan, regional revitalization has become a pressing issue, while globally, challenges such as food security, environmental crises, and infectious diseases have intensified. Climate change, soil degradation, marine pollution, and rapid urbanization are threatening the stability of food supply systems. In order to restore the Earth to a sustainable state, we must recognize that humanity is merely one part of nature and work to reconstruct a social system that harmonizes with the natural world. Accelerating research and applying its findings in practice is an urgent necessity.

　What does it mean to be a doctor? More than possessing vast knowledge, a true scholar is someone who seeks wisdom, discerns the right path, and remains steadfast in their pursuit. A Ph.D. is not merely a generator of new knowledge but a custodian of wisdom, responsible for sharing it with society and passing it on to future generations. The essence of academia lies in confronting challenges with sincerity, sharing knowledge, and collaborating with others to contribute to the advancement of society as a whole.

　The path you have chosen will not be an easy one. Doctoral research is a journey filled with trial and error, and failure is inevitable. However, beyond those struggles lie new discoveries and truths. A scholar is someone who steps into the unknown and finds a way forward despite difficulties. Only those with the resolve to persevere can stand at the forefront of knowledge.

　Moreover, doctoral research is never a solitary endeavor. Academic progress is born through the exchange of diverse perspectives. To deepen your research, it is crucial to listen to others, engage in discussions, and challenge each other intellectually. Embracing different values and viewpoints while working together to forge new paths is the hallmark of a true researcher. Furthermore, as Ph.D. holders, you will play a key role in nurturing the next generation of scholars and driving societal progress. Your dedication to research and your unwavering curiosity will inspire those around you. The doctoral program is not just a personal journey of growth; it is a place where you must recognize your responsibility in shaping the future of academia and society.

　As you move forward, you will encounter many “coincidences.” But whether these moments become meaningful depends on your insight. Albert Einstein once said, “God does not play dice with the universe.” This suggests that what appears to be coincidence often follows an inherent logic. Similarly, Alexander Fleming did not dismiss the mold in his petri dish as a mere accident; instead, he recognized its potential, leading to the discovery of penicillin—a breakthrough that revolutionized medicine. A doctoral program is a place of discovery and new encounters. Embrace unexpected phenomena, research findings, and the people you meet.
