Introduction to Faculty of Engineering
Faculty of Engineering is located on the Koganei Campus, which is easily accessible by foot just an eight-minute walk from Higashi-Koganei Station on the JR Chuo Line. Surrounded by large cherry blossom, zelkova, and ginkgo trees and plenty of greenery, the vast park-like environment allows for cutting-edge research and enthusiastic education to be conducted. In April 2019, the eight departments were reorganized into six: Department of Biotechnology and Life Science, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Department of Applied Chemistry, Department of Applied Physics and Chemical Engineering, Department of Mechanical Systems Engineering, and Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Students can now choose from three specialties (Bio-Medical Engineering, Energy, Environment, and Materials, and Mobility, Robotics, Computers, and AI) to better suit their future careers in society. The school has set an educational goal of "Fostering intellectual professionals in engineering through zelkova-style education - cultivating the trunk of expertise and spreading the branches of diversity," and has created an educational curriculum that establishes "identity (autonomy, independence, and expertise)" and fosters "diversity (diversity, collaboration, and interdisciplinarity)." The curriculum of Faculty of Engineering includes many enthusiastic lectures by our faculty member, and we also hold many special lectures on the latest academic developments by gathering diverse talents from various institutions across the country. In addition, we provide a wide range of distinctive education, including extensive laboratory training, credit transfer with other universities, internships, and e-learning. As of May 2023, 2,386 undergraduate students are studying at the university, and the ratio of female students among those enrolled in 2023 is 28%, which is the highest among national universities. Our university also has a transfer admission system for graduates of technical colleges and currently employed people, and aims to be an open university. Furthermore, a "graduation thesis" is a required course in all departments, and small groups of around five students are assigned to each laboratory, where they work one-on-one with faculty member to conduct cutting-edge research. In the laboratories, students work with graduate students to conduct a wide range of research, from basic to applied. The results of their graduation research are presented to society by the students themselves at domestic and international conferences. Students who receive an education in such an excellent environment are highly motivated to continue on to graduate school at our university, with approximately 80% of students moving on every year. Meanwhile, we boast a job offer ratio of more than 5:1 with companies, and the achievements of our graduates are highly regarded in society.
