This is a tool called a mabushi, which is on display at Nature and Science Museum on the Koganei Campus (@tuatmuseum)!
When it's time for the silkworms to make cocoons, they live in these baskets and make their cocoons.

After a silkworm has completed its fourth molt, its body gradually becomes transparent and it wants to make a cocoon. At that point, it finds a place to hold on, attaches its body to, and begins making the cocoon.
If the circumference of the area where the cocoon is made is uniform, the cocoon will be of good quality and with a nice shape, so the baskets used to make cocoons have been continuously improved since ancient times!

At first, we used a simple tent called a Shimada tent, made by spreading out a handful of straw and bending each post to the left and right.
Each person could produce about 200 sprouts a day, but these sprouts were disposable and could only be used once, so it was difficult for silkworm farmers who needed a lot of sprouts.

After many improvements, the rotating basket shown in the photo was finally created. The rotating basket is made by dividing breathable cardboard into rectangular blocks in a grid pattern and hanging it from the ceiling so that it rotates. This takes advantage of the tendency of silkworms to climb to the top when they start making cocoons.
As the silkworms climb to the top, their weight causes the rotating cage to rotate half a turn, distributing the silkworms evenly throughout the cage, making it a revolutionary system that allows for full use of the cage without waste!

In addition to these two, there are many other things such as improved swarms and beehive swarms, so we hope you will come and visit Nature and Science Museum at TUAT!
