2022-12-12 Basic engineering experiment “Identification fluorescent dye synthesis ~Identification experiment~”
Following on from last week, I was given the opportunity to observe a "Basic Engineering Experiment" class for first-year students in Faculty of Engineering Department of Applied Chemistry.
Today I'd like to introduce you to an experiment on luminol reaction.
When another liquid is added to the examiner's liquid...
One that glowed pale and white!

Speaking of luminol reactions, it is famous for being used in police forensics to search for blood stains at crime scenes.
Luminol is a compound that emits a purple-blue color when it reacts with hydrogen peroxide.
This reaction is promoted by catalysts such as iron, copper, and cobalt, so by looking at the amount of light emitted, you can confirm whether a substance that acts as a catalyst is included.
Forensics have shown that hemoglobin in the blood is the catalyst for the fluorescence phenomenon.
In this experiment, the pipette contained potassium ferricyanide, a substitute for blood.
This also contains iron, which acts as a catalyst.
The second photo shows the class.
Associate Professor explains safety precautions for synthesis experiments.

The third and fourth photos are of measuring the reagent.
In order to safely perform experiments that involve handling dangerous chemicals or using heating equipment, it is important to study the precautions for chemical experiments in advance.
"Basic Engineering Experiments" aims to "experiment with true science that combines disciplines" necessary for science and mathematics universities, according to experiment items that combine physics, chemistry, biology, information, safety and security, the environment, etc. A class with this.
Through experiments on a wide range of themes, first-year students are learning what they need to deepen their specialized fields in the future.
